Welcome to Clash of Wings - Learning Skies
This meant to be a friendly place where no question is dumb. Please note, that other than the airplanes themselves, this server is not meant to be a historically accurate WW2 in any way.
Why are we doing this
We love WW2 full realism DCS. But we realize that there is a steep curve to get up to speed. Flying on Storm of War or LFDM (see below) requires that you purchase a ww2 aircraft, Normandy Map & WW2 assets pack. That's at least $120 if you buy on sale. Plus you'll probably want a HOTAS and some form of head tracking like a VR headset or TrackIR. That will set you back another $500 easy.. Then, after you've spent all that money, you log into a full realism sim (like SOW or LFDM), struggle just to take off and go wondering into unknown territory, just to get jumped by a pair of well coordinated adversaries that you didnt even see. Sound like fun? It might not be.
So, we strive to make getting started in WW2 DCS easier. In our server, you dont HAVE to buy any software. You can use the free TF-51, or you can buy just your favorite warbird. That's it. That's all you HAVE to by. Then you can come join us and learn the ropes in a newb friendly environment. It is our goal to grow the full realism WW2 player base!
How to get started
Download and install the FREE DCS World 2.5 Open Beta Fire up the FREE TF-51 mustang and come fly with us. With the TF-51 you wont be able to shoot (or defend yourself) but you can sure enjoy the magic of one of the greatest piston engined fighters every build. Check out this Stormbirds Article on the TF-51 if you dont believe us.
You'll probably want to take a few of the free, in game lessons on how to start, taxi, takeoff and land this beast. But once you do that a few time successfully, come join us on our multi-player server.

SRS is Simple Radio Standalone - its how we talk to eachother using in airplane radios. A good tutorial on setting up SRS DCS WORLD | How to download and use SRS No adjustment of frequencies are necessary with the warbirds. They are pre-set. Remember that you have to be in a plane with the power on and the radio set to the right channel.
- Allied airplanes - Channel A is used for team communications.
- German airplanes - Channels I and II are used for team communications.
Feel free to use the other channels for your flight communications. You'll soon find that teamwork is the secret to staying alive and winning. And good teamwork starts with good communication.
We strongly recommend downloading and using Tacview The ability to go back and analyze a fight, turn by turn is invaluable. Almost anyone who is any good now does (or at least did) use Tacview to get good.
This is a good tutorial on setting up tacview and using it: Explained: Tacview Installation & Operating Tutorial | DCS WORLD
Note that once set up is complete, Tacview automatically downloads the data file every time you hop on Clash of Wings. You don't need to open the app, just navigate to the file and double click to open it after you've exited DCS. The pathway Tacview installed on my PC is as follows: C:\users\username\Documents\Tacview YouTube
We keep track of player statistics on our stats page. We are experimenting with a new "event" based system that captures "events" as they occur on the DCS server and passes them through an event bus. The events are then processed asynchronously and presented in in near real time. This system is currently under development and is being tested on this server. If things work out, we may share the system with the other WW2 servers and/or release the software as open source software.
These stats are here for your enjoyment only. As the system is undergoing active development, you may notice changes in how the scoring is calculated over time. You might event be #1 on the leaderboard for Nov 4th, and then a week later, your standings on that day may change.
We are experimenting with workflows and weighting and display. We will take feedback on teh system however, our goal is to make it good enough to use on some of the bigger servers. Jump on the discord #statistic channel for discussion on the system
Still have questions?
Jump in our discord and ask us. Were here to help.. There is not stupid question
Where to go next
You'll probably want to purchase an armed fighter. You can buy birds like the P-51D, P-47D, Spitfire Mark IX, Bf-109 K4, FW-190 A-9 or FW-190 D-9.
For next steps in WWII experience we recommend moving on to Storm of War https://stormofwar.info/ Server - Storm of War Discord or LFDM [https://lfdm.online/index.php/fr/](https://lfdm.online/index.php/fr/. In addition to the Warbird of your choice, you'll need to purchase the Normandy map and the WW2 assets pack to fly here. But the realism and historical authenticity of are second to none.
